Background
Between 2006 and late 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) undertook a project in collaboration with 33 cities from around the world to identify which characteristics of the urban environment might make a city more "age-friendly". This culminated in the release of "Global Age-friendly Cities: a Guide" in 2007. The project stimulated intense global interest from many additional cities also wanting to foster active and healthy ageing among their residents. To support cities wishing to follow this approach, and to ensure the quality of the tools and interventions they use, WHO has now established the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities©.
The goals of the network are to:

The main goals of the workshop are to provide an opportunity for cities who are members of the Network, or who are interested in becoming members, to understand more about the current status of this global movement, to learn about recent related initiatives from around the world and to explore the best ways for developing the network so that it will adequately support their needs.
